A major winter storm is brewing, threatening to bring significant disruption to millions across the United States this weekend. With snow, ice, and even severe thunderstorms on the forecast, it's crucial to be prepared.

1. Gather Supplies:

  • Food and Water: Stock up on non-perishable food items (canned goods, dried fruits, nuts), bottled water, and pet food.

  • Medications: Ensure you have enough prescription medications and over-the-counter essentials like pain relievers and cold remedies.

  • First-Aid Kit: Have a well-stocked first-aid kit on hand, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary personal medications.

  • Flashlights and Batteries: Keep plenty of extra batteries for flashlights, lanterns, and other essential electronics. Consider having a battery-powered radio for emergency news updates.

  • Warm Clothing: Gather warm layers of clothing, including hats, gloves, scarves, and heavy coats.

  • Heating Sources: Have alternative heating sources available, such as a fireplace or a portable generator.

2. Home Preparedness:

  • Insulate Your Home: Seal any cracks or gaps around windows and doors to prevent drafts.

  • Check Heating Systems: Ensure your furnace is functioning properly and have it serviced if needed.

  • Clear Gutters and Downspouts: Prevent ice dams by clearing gutters and downspouts of any debris.

  • Protect Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing. If temperatures drop significantly, let a small trickle of water run from faucets to prevent them from freezing.

3. Vehicle Preparedness:

  • Winterize Your Car: Check your antifreeze levels, ensure your tires have adequate tread, and keep an emergency car kit in your vehicle. This kit should include jumper cables, a first-aid kit, a blanket, and some non-perishable snacks.

  • Plan Alternate Routes: Be aware of potential road closures and have alternative routes planned.

  • Charge Devices: Ensure your cell phone and other essential devices are fully charged.

4. Stay Informed:

  • Monitor Weather Alerts: Stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings from reliable sources like the National Weather Service.

  • Have a Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan with family and friends in case of power outages or other emergencies.

5. Safety Precautions:

  • Avoid Travel if Possible: If possible, avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

  • Be Cautious on Roads: If you must travel, drive slowly and cautiously. Be aware of black ice and reduced visibility.

  • Never Use a Generator Indoors: Using a generator indoors can release deadly carbon monoxide fumes.
