Satisfaction: There's a real sense of accomplishment in creating something delicious from scratch.
Versatility: This basic recipe is a blank canvas. Experiment with different flours, add-ins, and shaping techniques to create endless variations.
Ready to Get Started?
Ingredients:
1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
Instructions:
Bloom the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
Add Ingredients: Stir in salt and 2 cups of flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.
First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Loaf: Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf in a greased loaf pan.
Second Rise: Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool: Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and enjoying.
Tips and Variations:
For extra flavor: Add 1 tablespoon of honey or molasses to the warm water.
For a heartier bread: Use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
Add-ins: Incorporate herbs, spices, cheese, or nuts into the dough for extra flavor.
Baking your own bread is a rewarding experience. Gather your ingredients, roll up your sleeves, and enjoy the delicious aroma of freshly baked goodness!
